The pathology mostly concerns the lateral meniscus and is presented in the young population and during adolescence. A discoid meniscus is present at birth. It occurs when the cartilage does not properly develop, resulting in a thicker disc- or oval-shaped meniscus. The defect most often occurs in the meniscus on the outer (lateral) part of the knee joint.

Some patients may experience the feeling that their knee is giving away. Once a discoid meniscus is torn, it usually does not heal because the meniscus lacks a strong blood supply. In cross-section, the menisci are triangular is shape but when viewed from above they appear “C”-shaped. The menisci distributes the forces across the knee more evenly and help stabilized the knee.

Discoid meniscus in both knees

There are 3 types of discoid menisci. The classifications are: Incomplete Discoid Meniscus.

We report a case of a 52-year-old female with medial and lateral discoid menisci in both knees. Arthroscopy revealed the lateral menisci of both knees were complete discoid menisci, and partial meniscectomy was performed. A discoid medial meniscus is a very rare anomaly, and it is difficult to diagnose a bilateral discoid medial meniscus because not all the discoid medial menisci are symptomatic. Herein, we report 2 cases of bilateral discoid medial meniscus.

Approximately 20% of individuals diagnosed with a discoid meniscus have it in both knees. Discoid menisci on both the medial and lateral sides are rare, and there are very few reports on cases involving both sides. Arthroscopy revealed the lateral menisci of both knees were complete discoid menisci, and partial meniscectomy was performed. The cause is unknown, but discoid meniscus is thought to be a developmental or congenital problem (you are born with it).
